3rd and final workshop with Richard Sweeney

In this session we were shown how to create modular forms, simply using 2d triangles. From this I have been able to concentrate on ways of manipulating 2d shapes to produce 3d forms. This was probably my favourite workshop out of the three. Below are a few examples of my work from this workshop.

Paper Cuts

I stumbled across the work of Rob Ryan on the internet, and found it useful for my research in to working with paper. His work is 2d, however what I found interesting is the way he includes type in his paper cuts. Below are a few examples of his work, which are all cut out by hand...

I think that his work looks delicate and I think that each piece has a story to tell. The combination of text and image work well together. He has also used laser cuts in his work, which you can see below. This is probably my favourite of all his work. What I really like about this particular piece is the immense detail of the floral pattern. Also the way he has used paper with a printed text on it already, I think this adds to the visual quality of the piece.

2nd Workshop with Richard Sweeney

This week I continued experimenting with different ways of developing my 3d structure. In the workshop I used an A2 sheet of paper and cut slits into it. I then played around with the paper trying a range of ways to create 3d forms. Here's some photos of my outcomes.

Back to nature

Nature is full of beautiful forms, which in almost every case is accidental. Maybe that's the reason why they are so amazing? These images have been inspiring the way that i'm developing ideas for my 3d sculpture. I have especially been looking at fractal patterns in nature. Below you can see how a simple repeated pattern can look so complex.

1st Workshop with Richard Sweeney

Started off by only using A5 card and manipulated and experimented with different ways of creating a structure. However without using any tape or glue etc. Below are some of examples of my work from that workshop

REPEAT repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat repeat...you get the idea

So i've been looking at repetition in nature. Here you can see how patterns and colours are repeated on the wings of a butterfly. These are definitely inspiring me of ways of how to develop and create my own 3d structure.
